The Defence Ministry has introduced new entitlement rules for granting disability pensions to military personnel. These rules include an 'impairment relief' in place of the 'disability element' to cover lifestyle diseases like hypertension and diabetes. The change comes after a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General highlighted a high percentage of officers and personnel below officer rank drawing disability pensions upon retirement. The new rules have faced criticism from veterans' organizations, citing regressive changes. They argue that certain disabilities common in military service are now excluded. These rules aim to ensure that disability compensation aligns with the genuine needs of soldiers, veterans, and widows.
