A significant portion of packaged food products in India falls under the unhealthy category, constituting one-third of total revenue in the sector, reports the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI).
Analyzing 1,901 products from the top 20 food companies, only 24% are classified as healthier, representing 36% of overall sales. ITC leads healthiness scores, with Hindustan Unilever, Nestlé India, PepsiCo India, and Coca-Cola India following.
However, the average healthiness score is 1.9 out of 5, indicating a concerning trend. The study emphasizes the lack of a universal definition for healthy food, posing a challenge for companies striving to offer healthier choices.
