Urban-Rural Spending Gap Narrows in 2023-24

In 2023-24, the difference in spending between urban and rural households in India became smaller. The Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) was ₹4,122 in rural areas and ₹6,996 in urban areas. This means the urban-rural gap decreased to 69.7% from 83.9% in 2011-12. Both urban and rural households spent more on non-food items. In rural areas, non-food spending rose to 53% from 47% in 2011-12, and in urban areas, it increased to 60% from 57%.
