Supreme Court Allows Banks to Charge Over 30% Interest on Credit Card Dues

The Supreme Court has overturned a 2008 National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) order that limited banks to charging a maximum of 30% interest on credit card dues. The NCDRC had deemed rates between 36% and 50% as excessive and an unfair trade practice, citing the lack of bargaining power for credit card users. It compared global rates, noting lower figures in developed countries like the US (9.99%-17.99%) and UK. A bench of Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma set aside the order, favoring banks' appeals.
