A recent survey by NABARD reveals that the average monthly income of rural households in India surged by 58% between 2016-17 and 2021-22, reaching Rs 12,698. Salaried jobs, particularly in government or private sectors, were the largest income source, contributing 37% of total income. Agricultural households earned slightly more, at Rs 13,661 per month, while non-agricultural households earned Rs 11,438. Household expenditure also rose to Rs 11,262 from Rs 6,646, with savings improving significantly. Around 66% of households saved money in 2021-22, compared to 50.6% five years earlier.
