RBI Governor Affirms ₹2,000 Notes Still Valid
The RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra, recently confirmed that ₹2,000 currency notes, though not in circulation, remain legal tender. During a parliamentary meeting, concerns about counterfeit notes were raised, particularly regarding the 1.12 lakh fake ₹500 notes seized. Despite the withdrawal announcement in May 2023, ₹2,000 notes worth ₹6,099 crore are still in circulation. The RBI reassured that efforts to combat counterfeit currency are ongoing. Until recently, the public could deposit these notes at any bank, but this has now shifted to designated RBI offices across the country.
