Apple vs CCI: A Legal Battle in India

23 Jan, 2026

Apple is currently embroiled in a significant legal battle with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) over its app store policies. The tech giant has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, seeking to prevent the CCI from accessing its global financial records as part of an ongoing investigation. This legal maneuver comes as Apple challenges the legitimacy of the Indian laws under which the CCI is operating.

The investigation by the CCI alleges that Apple has abused its dominant position in the app market, a claim that Apple firmly denies. The stakes are incredibly high for Apple, as it fears facing fines of up to $38 billion if the CCI calculates penalties based on its global turnover. To counter this, Apple has contested the new penalty regulations set to take effect in 2024, with the case currently pending in court.

Despite Apple’s legal attempts to stall the investigation, the CCI has continued its pursuit, recently issuing a private order on December 31 for Apple to provide its financial records. In response, Apple has approached the Delhi High Court, requesting a temporary halt to the investigation until the validity of the penalty laws can be determined. The company argues that complying with the CCI's demands at this stage would undermine its broader legal challenge against the penalty regulations.

This case has garnered significant attention, as it highlights the ongoing tensions between global tech companies and regulatory bodies in India. The CCI defends its position, asserting that stringent regulatory measures are essential to prevent multinational corporations from engaging in unfair practices.

The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear this matter on January 27, marking a critical moment for Apple as it navigates the complexities of Indian law and regulatory scrutiny. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications not just for Apple, but for the entire tech industry operating in India.
