Constipation in Youth: Causes and Remedies
Constipation is increasingly becoming a common issue among young adults in India, a problem that was once primarily associated with older individuals. This rising trend can be attributed to several lifestyle and dietary factors that are prevalent among today's youth.
One of the primary reasons for this gut slowdown is the lack of fiber in their diet. Many young people heavily rely on junk food, white bread, and processed snacks, while neglecting essential sources of fiber such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A fiber-deficient diet makes it difficult for the intestines to push waste smoothly, leading to harder stools and irregular bowel movements.
Dehydration is another significant contributor to constipation. Many individuals do not drink enough water throughout the day, opting instead for caffeinated beverages, soft drinks, or energy drinks. A low water intake can worsen constipation, as water helps to soften stools, making them easier to pass.
Additionally, long hours of sitting and a general lack of physical activity play a crucial role in slowing down intestinal movement. Whether it's working, studying, gaming, or scrolling through social media, a sedentary lifestyle can hinder digestion. Engaging in regular physical activity is essential for maintaining gut health.

Stress can directly impact digestion, causing bloating, cramps, and constipation. Irregular meal timings, skipping breakfast, late-night snacking, and reliance on fast food are also significant contributors to digestive issues.
To combat constipation, young adults can adopt a few simple lifestyle changes. Incorporating more fiber-rich foods such as whole wheat chapatis, oats, brown rice, lentils, beans, leafy greens, and bananas into their diet can make a significant difference. Drinking 2–3 liters of water daily, staying active, having regular meals, ensuring adequate sleep, and managing stress are all essential steps for improving gut health.
If constipation persists for more than two weeks or is accompanied by pain or bleeding, seeking medical advice is crucial to rule out any underlying health concerns. Adopting these practices can help the youth in India maintain a healthier digestive system and overall well-being.
