Recent insights from Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist based in the US, have shed light on three common household items that could be secretly harming our health. It’s essential to be aware of these dangers and recognize that some of the most harmless-looking items may pose significant risks over time.

First on the list are scented candles. Many people love lighting a cozy vanilla candle at the end of a long day, but what they don’t realize is that these candles can release harmful substances. Dr. Sethi points out that many scented candles contain phthalates, which can disrupt hormonal balance, and paraffin wax, which emits soot and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when burned. This means that while you may be relaxing, you could be inhaling tiny chemical particles that irritate your lungs and affect indoor air quality. A safer alternative would be unscented soy, coconut, or beeswax candles, which burn cleaner and do not release harmful compounds.

Next, consider the plastic cutting boards in your kitchen. While they might be lightweight and colorful, they can shed microplastics into your food due to knife marks. Dr. Sethi warns that the risk accumulates over years of use. Research indicates that these microplastics can leach into food, potentially affecting gut health when ingested regularly. Instead, opt for wooden or bamboo boards, which are naturally antimicrobial, or glass boards, which are the most hygienic option.

Lastly, many of us rely on non-stick pans for their convenience. However, Dr. Sethi cautions that older non-stick pans often contained PFOA, a chemical associated with reproductive and hormonal issues. Even newer pans, while PFOA-free, can release microscopic coating particles when scratched, which may emit toxins, especially at high temperatures. Switching to stainless steel, cast iron, or pure ceramic cookware can be a healthier choice, although these options may require more care.

It’s crucial to understand that the dangers from these items don’t manifest immediately. The real threat lies in long-term exposure, which can lead to hormone imbalance and gut irritation without obvious symptoms. As Dr. Sethi emphasizes, spreading awareness about these hidden dangers is vital, as protecting our health often begins with the simplest changes at home.

By recognizing and replacing these harmful items, we can take significant steps towards better health and well-being. It’s time to rethink what we keep in our kitchens!
