Ishan Kishan's IPL Captaincy Debut Tonight: Can He Lead SRH Without Cummins at Chinnaswamy?

28 Mar, 2026

When Pat Cummins signed his SRH contract ahead of IPL 2026, nobody anticipated that the opening match of the tournament would go ahead without him. But injury has rewritten that script — and in Cummins' place stands Ishan Kishan, ready for his first IPL captaincy.

Kishan's appointment carries genuine intrigue. He is one of Indian cricket's most talented yet unpredictable players — a wicketkeeper-batter who can destroy attacks with attacking stroke play, but who has also had extended periods on the fringes of the national team. An IPL captaincy, especially at a franchise as explosive as SRH, is a major statement of faith from the management.

Notably, this isn't Kishan's first experience with leadership. Last year, he guided Jharkhand to their first-ever Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title — a feat that earned him enormous respect in domestic circles and clearly influenced the SRH management's decision. SRH coach Daniel Vettori was effusive in his praise, highlighting Kishan's maturity, reading of the game, and growing influence as a senior player.

The tactical challenges tonight are significant. SRH's bowling attack, shorn of Cummins' match-winning ability, looks vulnerable on a surface where 200-plus totals are common. Kishan must use Jaydev Unadkat in the powerplay smartly, contain Virat Kohli with bowling changes, and ideally contribute with the bat himself to set a competitive platform.

On the batting side, SRH's resources are still formidable. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma form arguably the most destructive opening pair in the tournament. Heinrich Klaasen can clear the rope at will in the death overs. And Nitish Kumar Reddy provides all-round depth. If Kishan can anchor SRH's innings and free up the stroke-players around him, SRH have the batting to post a threatening total.

The subtext of tonight also feeds a larger IPL 2026 storyline. For the first time in the tournament's history, all 10 franchises are captained by Indian players — a landmark moment for domestic talent. Kishan's debut as SRH captain tonight is, in a sense, a symbol of that shift.

Win or lose, Ishan Kishan's night begins here. And cricket will be watching very closely.
