Dr. Kshitij Raghuvanshi, a Urologist at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune, warns that kidney disease often develops silently. However, our lifestyle choices significantly influence kidney health. One of the most common culprits is the overuse of over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen are frequently used for headaches or body aches. Yet, their frequent or unsupervised use can lead to chronic interstitial nephritis, a serious kidney inflammation.

Another area of concern is salt consumption. Many believe that alternatives like sea salt or Himalayan pink salt are healthier than regular table salt. However, all these salts comprise sodium chloride, with only minor differences in trace minerals. The real issue lies in excessive sodium intake, which can elevate blood pressure—a leading cause of kidney damage. Instead of switching salts, it's essential to limit overall sodium consumption.

Hydration is vital, but drinking excessive amounts of water can also be harmful. Consuming six to seven liters a day is unnecessary and can lead to hyponatremia, a condition where sodium levels in the blood drop too low. This can strain the kidneys as they work overtime to excrete the excess water, potentially leading to serious health issues.

It’s crucial to understand that seemingly harmless habits, such as taking painkillers for minor discomfort, adding too much salt to meals, or drinking excessive water, can quietly damage kidney function over time. To safeguard kidney health, it is essential to use medications responsibly, control salt intake, and maintain appropriate hydration levels.
