LPG Rules Changing From May 1, 2026: Booking Interval, OTP Delivery & Price Impact Explained

Starting May 1, 2026, LPG consumers across India will experience a structured shift in how cylinders are booked, delivered, and subsidised. These updates, implemented by major oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, reflect a broader attempt to streamline distribution and reduce inefficiencies in the system.

The most noticeable change is the extension of the booking interval. Urban consumers must now wait 25 days between bookings, while rural users may face a gap of up to 45 days. This adjustment is expected to improve supply balance but may require households to plan their usage more strategically.

In parallel, the introduction of OTP-based authentication at the time of delivery adds a layer of transparency and security. This ensures that LPG cylinders, especially subsidised ones, reach the intended recipient and are not diverted into the black market.

For beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Aadhaar-based eKYC has become mandatory if not already completed. This requirement reinforces the government’s direct benefit transfer system and ensures subsidies are accurately targeted.

Pricing remains another key concern. After a recent ₹60 increase in domestic LPG cylinder rates, further revisions are likely as companies evaluate global energy trends and supply chain disruptions.

Additionally, the government’s push towards Piped Natural Gas signals a long-term transition in household energy consumption. In cities with PNG infrastructure, LPG usage may gradually decline as consumers are encouraged—or required—to switch.

Overall, these changes highlight a shift towards a more regulated, transparent, and efficiency-driven LPG distribution system in India. Consumers are advised to stay updated, complete necessary KYC requirements, and plan their bookings in advance to avoid inconvenience.
