SEBI Warns About Risky Opinion Trading Platforms

India's markets regulator, SEBI, has warned investors about 'opinion trading platforms' that are emerging in the online gaming and betting sector. These platforms let users bet on the outcomes of real-life events, such as sports or elections, and have raised over Rs 4,200 crore in funding. However, SEBI points out that these platforms are not officially regulated and that trading through them could lead to legal issues. Participants risk losing money without any investor protection, as these platforms operate outside SEBI's purview. With a user base of over 5 crore and transaction volumes exceeding Rs 50,000 crore, the need for regulation is urgent.
