The U.S. economy grew at a 2.8% annual rate in the third quarter, lower than the expected 3.1% and down from 3% in the second quarter. Strong consumer spending and federal government spending were major contributors to this growth.
This report, released by the Commerce Department, shows the economy is expanding despite high interest rates and concerns about growth sustainability after the pandemic. Consumer spending makes up about two-thirds of economic activity and has been surprisingly strong.
