This alarming trend has caught the attention of cardiologists who emphasize the need for awareness and lifestyle changes.

Dr. Subrat Akoury, a senior cardiologist, notes that the number of young patients experiencing heart-related complaints has dramatically increased. Just a decade ago, it was rare to see patients under 30 with such issues, but now it’s alarmingly common. Stress is identified as the primary culprit, with young people facing pressure from studies, jobs, and relationships.

In India, lifestyle choices play a significant role in heart health. Irregular eating habits, lack of exercise, and excessive screen time contribute to rising cholesterol levels, which can start to build up in arteries as early as one’s 20s. Dr. Akoury warns that the decisions made today can impact heart health for decades to come.

Moreover, smoking, vaping, and binge drinking are becoming more prevalent among the youth. Even seemingly harmless products like vapes contain harmful chemicals. Alcohol consumption can lead to irregular heart rhythms, further endangering heart health.

While fitness culture is booming, experts caution that overexertion can have negative effects. Many young people jump into intense workout routines or take supplements without proper guidance, risking their heart health. Additionally, poor sleep patterns, often due to excessive screen time, can be as harmful as smoking, as sleep is crucial for heart recovery.

However, there is hope. Early detection of heart issues can save lives, as noted by Dr. Vikash Goyal from Paras Health in Gurugram. The rise in heart attack cases among young adults can be attributed to sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and conditions like diabetes and hypertension appearing at younger ages.

Signs like chest pain, unusual fatigue, and shortness of breath should never be dismissed. Preventive tests are recommended to identify risks early and avoid life-threatening situations.

This World Heart Day, with the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat,” serves as a crucial reminder for young adults to prioritize their heart health and seek timely medical advice when needed. Taking these warnings seriously can pave the way for healthier futures.
