Australia Revamps Squad for Ashes 2025 Opener

05 Nov, 2025

Australia has recently announced its squad for the first Test of the Ashes 2025, set to commence on November 21 at Optus Stadium, Perth. The selectors have made the bold decision to drop young opener Sam Konstas, who struggled with a series of disappointing scores in the previous Test campaign. His performance included scores of just 3, 5, 25, 0, 17, and 0, leading to this much-anticipated change.

In a significant move, senior batter Marnus Labuschagne has earned his place back in the squad after displaying exceptional form in the domestic circuit for Queensland. He scored five centuries in just seven games across various formats, proving his capability to perform under pressure. With Labuschagne's return, he is likely to take over his preferred No. 3 batting position, contributing to a more stable batting lineup.

Additionally, the squad has welcomed three uncapped players, including 31-year-old Jake Weatherald, who may have the chance to make his international debut as an opener, stepping in for Konstas. The selectors seem to be keen on infusing fresh talent into the team, possibly to shake things up after their recent defeat in the World Test Championship final against South Africa.

Usman Khawaja, a veteran opener, recently partnered with Konstas but will now have to adjust to a new opening combination. The absence of other potential picks like Matthew Renshaw and Mitch Marsh indicates the selectors are focusing on a specific strategy for the upcoming series against England.

George Bailey, the chief selector for Cricket Australia, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming preparations in Perth. He emphasized the importance of the squad's balance and noted that 14 of the selected players will participate in the next round of Sheffield Shield games, allowing selectors to gather further insights as the first Test approaches.

The Australian squad for the first Test includes notable names such as Steve Smith (captain), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and Mitchell Starc. With the series against England looming, the team is eager to showcase their skill on the international stage and aim for victory in the Ashes.
