Bollywood's Journey: From ₹1 Crore to ₹1000 Crore

06 Apr, 2026

Bollywood has made incredible strides in its journey, evolving from films that initially made just ₹1 crore to colossal blockbusters grossing ₹1000 crore. This transformation reflects the industry's growth and the changing landscape of Indian cinema.

The journey began with films like "Kismet," where Ashok Kumar introduced the concept of anti-heroes. It broke new ground by becoming the first Indian film to earn ₹1 crore. This marked the beginning of a legacy that would see films continuously shattering box office records.

As time progressed, K. Asif’s epic "Mughal-e-Azam" shattered records as the highest-grossing film of its time, earning ₹10 crore domestically. This was followed by the family drama "Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!" which was a game-changer, grossing ₹72 crore in India and setting a new standard for family-centric films.

The establishment of the ₹100 crore club came courtesy of Aamir Khan's "Ghajini." This film not only captured the audience's hearts but also set a new benchmark for what constituted a blockbuster in Indian cinema. Following closely was "3 Idiots," which pushed the envelope further, establishing the 200-crore club.

Aamir's influence didn’t stop there; his film "PK" became the first Hindi movie to surpass ₹300 crore, setting a record that stood for years until "Dangal" took it to new heights at ₹387 crore. However, the landscape of cinema began to shift as pan-Indian films dominated box offices with records surpassing ₹500 crore.

The return of Shah Rukh Khan with "Pathaan" marked a significant moment in Bollywood, as it grossed ₹543 crore in India and over ₹1000 crore globally. His follow-up, "Jawan," set a new standard by crossing ₹600 crore domestically, showcasing the phenomenal resurgence of Bollywood.

Now, "Dhurandhar: The Revenge" has taken things to another level, with net earnings surpassing ₹1000 crore. This not only highlights the potential of Bollywood but also shows its ability to compete with pan-Indian blockbusters like "KGF" and "RRR." The future of Indian cinema looks brighter than ever, as filmmakers continue to push boundaries and tell compelling stories.
