CBI Traces Rs 1.2 Crore Assets in Corruption Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made significant strides in uncovering alleged corruption involving suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar. In a recent court hearing, the CBI revealed that they have traced assets worth Rs 1.2 crore belonging to Krishanu Sharda and his wife, which they claim are proceeds from corrupt activities. This revelation comes as the agency seeks to further interrogate the accused to unravel a larger conspiracy.
The special CBI court, presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge Bhawna Jain, has granted police remand for both Bhullar and Sharda. The CBI's Public Prosecutor, Narender Singh, presented evidence suggesting Sharda acted as a conduit in facilitating undue favors for Bhullar. The prosecutor highlighted that the timing and nature of the assets accumulated by Sharda and his wife strongly indicate corruption linked to their dealings with senior public servants.
Despite the defense counsel's arguments that the CBI's asset list was arbitrary, the court maintained that material evidence, including digital data from Sharda's phone, warranted further investigation. The court emphasized the need to uncover the broader conspiracy, indicating that Sharda's alleged accumulation of wealth over the past two years must be thoroughly examined.
During the proceedings, the CBI indicated that Bhullar had been uncooperative during questioning and had failed to provide clear answers regarding the sources of his wealth. This led to his formal arrest, and the court stated that his interrogation was crucial for a comprehensive investigation. The defense argued against the legitimacy of the CBI's FIR, claiming it violated legal protocols. However, the court dismissed these objections, reaffirming the CBI's jurisdiction in the case.
This unfolding case is a stark reminder of the challenges India faces in combating corruption within its bureaucratic systems. The CBI's efforts to trace and seize assets derived from corrupt practices highlight the ongoing struggle for accountability and transparency in public service. As investigations proceed, the public will be keenly watching how justice is served in this high-profile case.
