Coolie: Rajinikanth's ₹500 Crore Blockbuster Breaks Records

30 Aug, 2025

Rajinikanth's latest film, "Coolie," has made headlines by crossing the ₹500 crore mark globally within just 16 days of its release. This Tamil-language action thriller, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has been a major success despite facing an 82% drop in box office earnings during its second week. The film was released on August 14, coinciding with Independence Day and has drawn significant attention from fans and moviegoers alike.

On its opening day, "Coolie" earned an impressive ₹65 crore net in India. The film continued to perform well in its first week, amassing ₹229.65 crore net. However, the second week was a different story, with earnings dropping to ₹41.85 crore, which signifies an 81.78% decline. This drop, however, hasn't deterred its overall success, as it has still managed to garner a total of ₹273.69 crore net in India over its 16-day theatrical run.

One of the interesting aspects of "Coolie" is its clash with other big releases, particularly Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's "War 2." Despite this, "Coolie" became the biggest opener for a Tamil film, both in India and worldwide. The film opened to wide acclaim, although recent reports indicate dwindling footfalls, with an occupancy rate of 16.56% on August 29.

The film’s gross earnings reached ₹498 crore globally by day 15, with ₹176.25 crore coming from overseas markets. The remaining ₹321.75 crore was generated through domestic business. Fans can expect to see "Coolie" on the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video in late 2025, following the typical 45 to 60-day theatrical window for digital releases.

Featuring an ensemble cast, including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Shruti Haasan, "Coolie" is Rajinikanth's 171st film. Film analyst Sumit Kadel praised the movie, giving it a 3.5-star rating. He noted that the film is packed with thrilling twists every few minutes, keeping the audience engaged. Overall, while it may not reach the heights of previous hits like "Vikram" or "Kaithi," "Coolie" remains a solid entertainer that fans won’t want to miss.
