Dhoni's Right Time to Step Back from CSK

18 Dec, 2025

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has recently shared his views on MS Dhoni's future with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He believes that now is the right time for Dhoni to step back. This comes after the IPL 2026 auction, where CSK made significant changes to their squad.

Uthappa pointed out that Dhoni's role has been evolving for some time. Since the captaincy was returned to him from Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni has been gradually passing on responsibilities, especially to younger players like Ruturaj Gaikwad. Uthappa emphasized that many players in the current squad were just kids when Dhoni first started playing in the IPL, highlighting the need for a transition.

During the IPL 2026 mini-auction, CSK made a bold move by picking up nine new players, including promising talents like all-rounder Prashant Veer and wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma. Both were acquired for a hefty sum, signaling a shift towards investing in younger, uncapped Indian players. This approach marks a departure from CSK’s traditional reliance on established stars.

Before the auction, CSK had already made strategic decisions regarding their leadership. They traded Ravindra Jadeja, a former captain, and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals for Sanju Samson, who had significant experience as a captain. This indicates a clear shift in CSK’s strategy as they look to rebuild and focus on the future.

Uthappa's insights reflect the changing dynamics of CSK as they prepare for a new era. Embracing younger players and transitioning leadership responsibilities may pave the way for a more dynamic and competitive team. As Dhoni steps back, CSK will need to identify and develop a strong core group to build upon.
