Gill's T20 Snub: Manjrekar's Bold Critique
Shubman Gill's exclusion from India's T20 World Cup squad has stirred significant discussion among cricket enthusiasts in India. The young batter had recently returned to the T20I setup as vice-captain, but his performance has been underwhelming, raising questions about his selection. Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar did not hold back in expressing his views on Gill’s form, which has been a topic of concern since his return.
Since July of last year, Gill has struggled to find his footing in T20 cricket, failing to score a fifty in 20 innings. His highest score during this period has been a mere 47, and his recent outings against South Africa have not been encouraging either. After returning from injury, Gill’s performance included a disappointing golden duck and a cautious innings of 28 runs, which further diminished his chances of securing a spot in the World Cup squad.
Manjrekar articulated that the selectors’ decision to drop Gill was a corrective measure, aimed at rectifying what he termed a mistake made during the selection process after Gill's impressive Test performances. He emphasized that T20 cricket demands aggressive batting and high strike rates, and the selectors likely felt Gill's cautious approach during matches would not benefit the team.
In his social media commentary, Manjrekar stated, “When you pick someone excitedly on Test performance for T20s, this is what happens.” He pointed out that Gill's failure to adapt to the dynamic nature of T20 cricket has led to his exclusion from the squad.
As the T20 World Cup approaches, India has opted to back other players such as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as openers. The selectors are focusing on players who can deliver quick runs and maintain high strike rates, which are crucial in the fast-paced format of T20 cricket.
Gill's struggle mirrors that of India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav, who also faces scrutiny for his lack of fifties in recent innings. Yadav acknowledged the need to address his form and expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back. With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, India will be hoping for a strong performance from its selected squad, as they aim for success on the global stage.
