GST Reforms: Price Changes and Economic Growth

22 Sep, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled significant GST reforms aimed at propelling India's economic growth, effective from September 22. These changes represent a crucial step towards the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, encouraging citizens to support local products. Modi emphasized that the reforms will benefit various segments of society, including the poor, middle-class, youth, farmers, women, traders, and shopkeepers.

To celebrate this initiative, a 'GST bachat utsav' or savings festival will commence, allowing consumers to purchase goods more affordably. The government aims to empower the Indian economy similarly to how the freedom movement once did, fostering a spirit of self-reliance among citizens.

However, the reforms also come with some drawbacks. While essential items may see a decrease in prices, the GST on 'sin' goods has been significantly raised. For instance, popular soft drinks like Coca-Cola and Pepsi will see a tax hike from 28% to a staggering 40%. Other non-alcoholic beverages will experience similar increases, with their GST rates rising from 18% to 40% as well.

Additionally, all goods containing added sugar or sweeteners, as well as flavored products, will now be taxed at this higher rate. The changes extend to petrol and diesel vehicles over specific engine capacities, including motorcycles above 350 cc and personal aircraft, which will also incur a 40% GST. This move targets luxury items, aligning with the government’s strategy to discourage excessive consumption of non-essential goods.

Furthermore, the taxation on tobacco products, including bidis, cigarettes, and pan masala, will follow suit with the same 40% GST rate. This is in line with global practices aimed at curbing harmful consumption and improving public health.

In conclusion, these GST reforms represent a dual approach: promoting local goods while imposing higher taxes on products deemed harmful. As consumers navigate these changes, the government’s goal remains clear: to bolster the economy while ensuring a healthier future for all citizens.
