India A ODI Squad Announced: New Faces Lead

15 Sep, 2025

The absence of cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the Indian ODI squad continues as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the teams for the upcoming series against Australia A. Set to begin on September 30 at Green Park Stadium, this series marks a significant moment for several young players aiming to make their mark on the international stage.

In a surprising move, the BCCI has appointed Rajat Patidar as the captain for the first match, with Tilak Varma leading in the subsequent games. This decision comes after much speculation about the potential return of Sharma and Kohli, who have been sidelined for this series. The selectors have opted for a fresh approach, focusing on nurturing promising talent ahead of the home Test season that kicks off just days later.

Patidar, who recently led his team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to victory in the IPL 2025, has caught the selectors' attention with his outstanding performance in the Duleep Trophy. His ability to score consistently, including four successive fifty-plus scores, has positioned him as a key player. Alongside him, a group of all-rounders like Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, and Suryansh Shedge have also been included, bringing a mix of youth and dynamism to the squad.

In addition to Patidar, the squad features wicket-keepers Prabhsimran Singh and Abhishek Porel, along with exciting opener Priyansh Arya, who has made waves in the IPL. This combination of players not only aims to take on Australia A but also serves as a platform for these athletes to showcase their skills and potentially earn a spot in the senior national team.

The three-match ODI series is crucial for the future of Indian cricket, as it allows young talents to gain valuable experience in high-pressure situations. With matches scheduled for September 30, October 3, and October 5, fans can look forward to an exciting display of cricket as these emerging stars take on a formidable Australian side. The selectors' decision to invest in youth reflects a strategic vision for the game in India, fostering a new generation of cricketers.
