IT Stocks Plunge: What's Behind the Selloff?

04 Feb, 2026

Indian IT stocks have faced a significant selloff, with major players like Infosys, TCS, and Wipro seeing declines of up to 6%. This downturn stems from growing concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to disrupt traditional IT services. The release of Anthropic's new AI chatbot has raised fears among investors that it may threaten the core business of many IT firms.

On February 4, shares of Infosys dropped by 6%, hitting their lowest point in nearly three months. TCS also experienced a similar decline in intraday trading. Wipro's stock fell 6.7%, and HCL Tech saw a drop of 6.44%. Consequently, the Nifty IT index fell by 5.99%, reflecting the overall negative sentiment in the market.

The AI chatbot from Anthropic is capable of performing tasks in areas such as law, sales, and marketing, which were previously managed by human operators. This has raised concerns about the potential for AI to replace jobs and services in the IT sector, leading to a massive selloff in tech stocks. Investors are increasingly wary, as this could signify a shift in how IT services are delivered.

The selloff was not limited to India. Global tech stocks also plummeted, with significant losses reported across the board. Major U.S. tech companies, including Nvidia, Meta, and Microsoft, saw declines of over 2%. In Asia, companies like Xero and Kingsoft Cloud Holdings Ltd. also experienced significant losses, reflecting a widespread trend in the technology sector.

Analysts have coined the term ‘SaaSpocalypse’ to describe the current state of software-as-a-service stocks, indicating a crisis in this sector. With Indian IT services being a crucial provider for U.S. companies, the current situation raises critical questions about the future viability of these firms in the face of rapid technological advancements.

As the market continues to react to AI developments, investors are advised to stay informed and consult with experts before making any investment decisions, particularly in the volatile tech sector.
