Karthik's Warning on Sundar's Batting Role
In a challenging Test match against South Africa, Washington Sundar took on the unusual role of batting at No. 3 for India. Despite his efforts, the team faced a disappointing 30-run defeat at the Eden Gardens, a pitch that was difficult for the batsmen. Sundar showed promise in his performance, but concerns were raised regarding his long-term position in the batting order.
Former Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik expressed his apprehension about Sundar's promotion to No. 3. He emphasized that this shift might distract Sundar from his primary role as a bowler. Karthik pointed out that by focusing more on his batting, Sundar might reduce the time he spends on bowling practice, which could eventually impact his effectiveness as a bowler. “The moment he starts spending those long hours for batting in practice, you tend to reduce your practice for bowling because it is physically impossible to be good at both,” Karthik stated.
He further questioned how Sundar's identity as a cricketer might change with this new role. “Where is Washington Sundar the Test player, being looked at? Is he a bowler who can bat?” Karthik asked, suggesting that the emphasis on batting could send a clear message to Sundar about the expectations placed upon him.
On the other hand, cricket legend Shaun Pollock praised Sundar's temperament in his new role, stating that he deserves a chance to prove himself at the top of the order. “Application is the right word. I think he will still work out his game plan how he wants to pace his innings at three,” Pollock noted. He believes that giving Sundar more opportunities will allow him to adapt and refine his approach to batting. Pollock also remarked that Sundar had been underutilized in the past and should be given a few more Test matches to showcase his potential.
As India navigates their strategy regarding Sundar, it will be interesting to see how this decision unfolds. Balancing his batting and bowling skills will be crucial for his success and the team's performance in future matches.
