Madhubanti Bagchi on Arijit Singh's Playback Exit
In a recent talk on Fever FM with Roshni, Madhubanti Bagchi shared her thoughts on the playback singing industry, particularly in light of Arijit Singh's announcement to stop taking new assignments. She expressed her views on how the industry restricts artists, confining them to specific roles rather than allowing them to explore their full potential.
Madhubanti pointed out that the music system often keeps singers, including highly talented ones like Arijit, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Shreya Ghoshal, in a box. She highlighted that while these artists have an incredible vocal range and artistry, the industry does not provide them with opportunities to showcase their versatility. Instead, they are often pigeonholed into singing crying or romantic songs, which can stifle their creativity.
She mentioned that for someone as gifted as Arijit, it took time to reach songs that truly reflect his artistry, like "Binte Dil." This, according to her, is a testament to how the playback industry has not been able to help artists realize their true capabilities. Madhubanti lamented that the financial backing and promotion for diverse kinds of songs are lacking, which limits the scope for singers to branch out into different genres.
Arijit Singh's recent decision to step back from playback singing has brought this issue to the forefront. In his farewell message, he expressed gratitude for the love and support he has received over the years, marking an end to what he called a "wonderful" journey. However, his exit raises questions about the future of playback singing in India and the freedom artists have to explore their craft.
Madhubanti’s reflections shed light on the ongoing challenges within the Indian music industry, where artists often struggle to break free from established norms. As the conversation continues, it becomes essential to consider how the industry can evolve to support creativity and allow artists like Arijit to shine in their true light.
