Nawazuddin Siddiqui on Indie Films and Their Struggles
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a celebrated actor in Indian cinema, has been a strong advocate for independent films for over a decade. Known for his roles in films like "The Lunchbox" and "Gangs of Wasseypur", he recently expressed concern about the struggles indie films face in gaining visibility and box office success in India. In a candid interview, he stated that while mainstream films dominate the theaters, indie films often struggle to find an audience.
Siddiqui pointed out that although he enjoys balancing his indie projects with commercial hits like "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" and "Raees", the reality is that independent films often receive fewer screens and less promotion. He believes this leads to a smaller audience turnout, which affects the box office performance of these films. “The biggest advantage of big films is that more people see you,” he said, indicating that visibility from mainstream cinema can benefit indie projects.
He further compared independent films to classical art forms, suggesting that they are crafted for a niche audience. In his view, these films cannot simply cater to mass appeal without losing their essence. “If you want to do it for the masses, you have to include certain elements,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of preserving the artistic integrity of independent cinema.
Despite the challenges, Siddiqui remains committed to indie films. He believes they are vital for maintaining diversity in storytelling within the film industry. His recent performance as a vampire in the horror comedy "Thamma" has been well-received, showcasing his versatility as an actor. The film, part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, has performed well at the box office, earning ₹93 crore in just four days, proving that unique and unconventional stories can still resonate with audiences.
As Indian cinema continues to evolve, Siddiqui’s passion for independent films serves as a reminder of the importance of diverse narratives in an industry often dominated by commercial blockbusters. His journey reflects the value of artistic expression and the need for a platform where unique voices can be heard.
