Why Are Petrol Prices Different Across Cities?
Fuel prices vary significantly between cities because of:
State VAT/Sales Tax: Maharashtra charges ~26% VAT on petrol; Chandigarh charges only ~14%. This explains why Mumbai petrol is ₹103.54 while Chandigarh is ₹87.07.
Central Excise Duty: ₹19.90/litre on petrol, ₹15.80/litre on diesel (revised in FY25–26).

Why Haven't Prices Been Cut Despite Global Crude Dipping?
