Digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, is an increasing concern among younger individuals in India, particularly Gen Z. This condition arises from excessive screen time without adequate breaks, leading to symptoms like dry eyes, redness, headaches, and difficulty focusing. With the rise of technology and digital devices, more young people are now experiencing these issues, which were once primarily seen in older working professionals.

The lifestyle choices prevalent among Gen Z—such as sedentary behavior, erratic sleep patterns, and unhealthy diets—are not just affecting their eyes. They also heighten the risk of lifestyle diseases, particularly Type 2 diabetes. According to Dr. Surabhi Kandelwal from Sankara Eye Hospital, the combination of high screen exposure and uncontrolled blood sugar can significantly increase the risk of severe eye complications, including diabetic retinopathy.

The crux of the issue lies in the lack of awareness and preventive measures. Many young individuals are unaware of how their digital habits can impact their eye health and overall wellbeing. To combat digital eye strain, experts recommend implementing simple strategies such as the 20-20-20 rule. This rule suggests that after every 20 minutes of screen time, one should look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Staying hydrated is another crucial aspect; adequate water intake helps maintain eye moisture and reduces strain. Additionally, ensuring that the lighting conditions are optimal while using screens can further alleviate discomfort. Regular vision tests are also important to monitor eye health and catch potential issues early.

Gen Z must adopt mindful screen habits and stay physically active to mitigate the risks associated with digital eye strain and diabetes. By incorporating these simple changes into their daily routines, they can protect their vision and invest in their future eye health.
