Rajasthan Makes Newspaper Reading Mandatory in Schools

The Rajasthan government has taken a significant step towards enhancing the educational framework by making newspaper reading mandatory in all government schools. This initiative aims to cultivate a habit of reading among students, which is crucial for their overall development. With a directive issued on December 31, students are required to spend at least 10 minutes each day reading newspapers during their morning assembly.

The primary goal of this initiative is to familiarize students with current affairs and improve their understanding of the world around them. By engaging with news content, students can develop critical thinking skills and learn to analyze information effectively. This practice not only broadens their vocabulary but also encourages them to engage in discussions about national and international issues.

Under this new directive, government senior secondary schools and English-medium institutions are instructed to subscribe to at least two newspapers—one in Hindi and one in English. Meanwhile, upper primary schools must ensure that at least two Hindi newspapers are available for students. The costs associated with these subscriptions will be covered by the Rajasthan School Education Council based in Jaipur.

Additionally, schools are encouraged to identify five new words from the newspapers each day and explain their meanings to help strengthen students' language skills. This daily exercise will not only enhance vocabulary but also promote a culture of learning and exploration among students.

During the morning assemblies, one national-level newspaper in English and one in Hindi will be read aloud, allowing students to hear and comprehend diverse perspectives on various topics. The initiative also emphasizes class-wise discussions, where students can delve into editorials and major developments in sports, politics, and more.

Officials believe that this program will not only improve students' general knowledge and social awareness but also better prepare them for competitive examinations. As education systems adapt to modern needs, such initiatives are crucial for fostering a well-informed and articulate generation. This move follows a similar directive from the Uttar Pradesh government, highlighting a growing trend towards incorporating current affairs into the school curriculum across India.
