Rajpal Yadav's Response to Priyadarshan's Comments

02 Mar, 2026

Rajpal Yadav, a popular Indian actor, recently responded to comments made by filmmaker Priyadarshan regarding his financial difficulties. Priyadarshan suggested that Rajpal's “poor education” contributed to his legal troubles, which stem from a debt of ₹9 crore. In an interview with Screen, Rajpal firmly disagreed, stating, “This is completely wrong. Priyanji doesn’t know me. I am a well-educated man.”

Rajpal, who has been in the industry for over 30 years, emphasized that his long career was proof of his capabilities despite the challenges he faced. He reflected on how even the most successful stars can encounter difficulties, but these issues are not necessarily linked to one’s educational background. “Had I been poorly educated, I wouldn’t have survived here for 25–30 years,” he pointed out.

The actor’s financial troubles began in 2010 when he took a loan of ₹5 crore from Murli Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata (2012). Unfortunately, the film did not perform well at the box office, which left him unable to repay the loan. This led to a legal dispute that escalated over the years. In April 2018, a magisterial court convicted Rajpal and his wife under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act due to bounced cheques, resulting in a sentence of six months in simple imprisonment.

Priyadarshan, who has collaborated with Rajpal on several projects, expressed his concern over the actor's situation. In an interview with Mid-Day, he mentioned, “I have known Rajpal for over 20 years.” He recounted their first meeting during the film Jungle (2000) and highlighted Rajpal’s talent. Priyadarshan revealed that he had encouraged producers to pay Rajpal more due to his financial issues and had continued to cast him in films and advertisements to support him.

Despite the challenges, the camaraderie between Rajpal and Priyadarshan showcases the supportive nature of relationships in the film industry. Priyadarshan believes in Rajpal’s talent and character, stating, “The poor guy made a blunder because of his poor education. Rajpal is a good soul.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding of how personal struggles can affect professional lives in the entertainment sector.
