Shwetha Menon Advocates for Women's Work Hours in Film

10 Sep, 2025

Shwetha Menon, the newly elected president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), is making waves in the film industry by advocating for fixed and structured working hours for women. Her call for change resonates deeply, especially in a profession where irregular hours and demanding schedules are the norm.

At the India Today South Conclave 2025, Shwetha shared her personal journey, emphasizing the need for a supportive work environment. Many women in the industry face challenges but often hesitate to voice them due to the fear of losing opportunities. Shwetha herself experienced this dilemma, having worked on four films while pregnant. She recounted informing her directors about her discomfort with early morning shoots, which they understood, setting a precedent for better communication.

One of her key messages was the importance of dialogue. Shwetha believes that many issues can be resolved through open conversations. However, she noted that people often avoid discussing their problems. During her tenure as AMMA's first female Vice President, she encouraged women to share their concerns, but many remained silent. This lack of communication contributes to the struggles women face in the industry.

Shwetha highlighted that many women are silently battling their challenges due to inadequate support systems and fear of jeopardizing their careers. She empathized with their concerns, stating, "I won’t blame them. Everyone is worried about their careers. But slowly, we will bring these issues to light.” Her commitment to advocating for women's rights in the industry is both inspiring and necessary.

Known for her versatility in roles, Shwetha Menon has made a significant mark in Malayalam cinema and has also appeared in Hindi and Tamil films. Beyond acting, she has hosted popular TV shows and won reality series like Bigg Boss Malayalam. Her recent election as the first woman president of AMMA is a historic milestone, paving the way for future generations of women in the film industry.

Through her leadership and advocacy, Shwetha Menon is not just addressing the issues faced by women in the film industry but is also inspiring a broader conversation about gender equality and support in workplaces across India.
