Soha Ali Khan's Fertility Journey: Age Myths Debunked
Soha Ali Khan recently shared her personal journey about fertility on her show, All About Her. At the age of 35, she consulted a gynaecologist with the intention of freezing her eggs. To her surprise, the doctor told her that she was already “too old” for such a procedure. This statement not only shocked Soha but also highlighted the societal stigma surrounding women's fertility.
During the discussion, fertility expert Dr. Manjusha Goel emphasized that age is not the only determining factor when it comes to fertility. Many women may retain their fertility well into their mid-40s, while others might see a decline much earlier. The critical aspect to consider is the ovarian reserve, which refers to the quantity and quality of eggs in a woman’s ovaries, rather than her age alone.
Dr. Goel explained that before reaching any conclusions about egg freezing, a comprehensive assessment must be conducted. This involves measuring AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) levels, performing a lower abdominal scan, and examining the antral follicle count to assess egg quality and quantity. Other factors, including Body Mass Index (BMI), lifestyle choices, family history of menopause, and any underlying medical conditions also play a significant role.
Women must consider their personal circumstances and timelines when thinking about egg freezing. Dr. Goel pointed out that if a woman is already in a stable relationship and plans to conceive within the next year, natural conception would be a better option. However, for those who are still undecided about motherhood due to personal or professional reasons, freezing eggs in their late 20s or early 30s is often the most suitable choice, as eggs are generally of optimal quality during this time.
While it is technically possible to freeze eggs at age 35 and above, the success rates may not be as favorable compared to earlier freezing. Many women express concerns that thawed and frozen eggs often do not result in successful pregnancies, despite the emotional and financial investments made in the process.
The takeaway from this discussion is the importance of awareness. Women need to understand that while age does play a role in fertility, the health of their reproductive system is a personal matter that varies from individual to individual.
