Taapsee Pannu: Clean Air is a Right, Not a Luxury

01 Dec, 2025

Taapsee Pannu, a prominent Indian actress, has voiced her concerns regarding the deteriorating air quality in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Having grown up in Delhi and now residing in Mumbai, she feels a deep connection to both cities. Recently, the air quality index (AQI) in these cities has reached alarming levels, with Delhi often registering hazardous readings. Pannu emphasizes that this crisis was anticipated and that ignoring it would be naive.

In her statement, she insists that clean air is a basic human right rather than a luxury. She questions the very essence of hard work when people cannot afford the fundamental necessity of clean air. "What are we working so hard for if we can’t even breathe clean air?" she asks, urging society to reflect on its priorities.

Pannu expresses concern for future generations, stating that the adverse effects of pollution will primarily impact the older and younger populations. She predicts that those who can afford to do so may begin relocating to cleaner environments, leaving behind those who are less fortunate. This would exacerbate the issues faced by the poor and marginalized, who often have no option but to stay and suffer the consequences of environmental neglect.

As of the latest reports, Mumbai's air quality has been rated predominantly in the Unhealthy category, with AQI values between 151-200. Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality is even worse, frequently falling into the Severe or Very Poor categories. This worrying trend is a reminder that urgent action is needed.

Pannu’s call to action is clear: we must take public health and environmental concerns seriously. The right to clean air should not be a privilege for the few but a guarantee for all. As climate change and pollution continue to be pressing issues, it is crucial for citizens, governments, and organizations to unite in their efforts to combat this crisis and ensure a healthier environment for everyone.
