Vidarbha Claims First Vijay Hazare Trophy Title

21 Jan, 2026

Vidarbha has established itself as a formidable force in Indian domestic cricket by clinching their first Vijay Hazare Trophy title. They triumphed over Saurashtra by 38 runs, marking a significant milestone in their cricketing journey. This victory not only highlights their prowess in white-ball cricket but also cements their reputation as a competitive team across all formats.

The match took place in Bengaluru, where Vidarbha opted to bat first on a red-soil pitch. Atharva Taide was the star of the show, scoring an impressive 128 runs. His performance was particularly noteworthy as it marked his first List A century in five years. Despite facing difficulties in the white-ball format recently, Taide's innings was crucial for Vidarbha’s success.

The team, coached by Usman Gani, has spent over a decade developing talent from a modest pool of players across eight districts in Vidarbha. This background has instilled resilience in them, allowing them to handle setbacks, such as the last-minute loss of senior player Dhruv Shorey before the final. Taide’s standout performance compensated for Shorey’s absence, demonstrating the depth of talent within the team.

As the match unfolded, Vidarbha's innings saw a steady flow of runs, with partnerships forming at crucial junctures. Taide's partnership with Yash Rathod, which yielded 133 runs, played a significant role in setting a challenging target of 318 runs for Saurashtra. Despite losing wickets towards the end of their innings, they managed to post a competitive total, showcasing their batting depth.

Chasing 318, Saurashtra faced immediate pressure from Vidarbha’s bowlers, with Yash Thakur and Nachiket Bhute claiming early wickets. However, Saurashtra’s Prerak Mankad and Chirag Jani attempted to stage a comeback with their solid batting. Mankad’s innings of 88 runs was commendable, but Vidarbha's bowlers maintained their composure, with Thakur eventually claiming four wickets to secure the victory.

This win is a testament to Vidarbha's growth in Indian cricket, showcasing their ability to compete at high levels. As they celebrate this historic achievement, Vidarbha is set to inspire future generations of cricketers, proving that talent and teamwork can lead to remarkable success.
