1.4 Crore Unmapped Voters in UP: What You Need to Know
In Uttar Pradesh, a significant number of voters have been labeled as 'unmapped' in the latest draft electoral list. Out of the 12.55 crore voters listed, 1.4 crore, or around 8%, have not completed the necessary mapping process. This was highlighted by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Navdeep Rinwa, during a press conference.
The term 'unmapped' refers to voters whose details have not been updated based on the last intensive electoral roll of 2003. If a voter's name does not appear in the earlier list, they are required to provide information about their parents or grandparents to establish their eligibility. Currently, about 91% of voters have been successfully mapped in Uttar Pradesh.
Notices will be dispatched to the 1.4 crore unmapped voters, urging them to submit necessary documents for their inclusion in the final voter list, which is expected to be published on March 6. Voters must check their names in the draft roll and complete Form 6 if their name is missing, or apply for corrections where necessary.
The process to resolve claims and objections will run from January 6 to February 6, with resolutions expected to take place from January 26 to February 27. The CEO emphasized the urgency for voters to act promptly, as the timeline is crucial for the upcoming elections.
Additionally, CEO Rinwa mentioned that more than 15 lakh Form 6 applications are pending scrutiny, indicating a considerable number of potential new voters. Young individuals who turn 18 by January 1, 2026, or those born before January 1, 2008, can fill out these forms, but their names will only be included in the list after they reach voting age.
The draft electoral roll underwent significant changes, retaining only 12.55 crore voters from a previous 15.44 crore. This reduction includes approximately 2.89 crore deletions due to various reasons such as deaths, migration, or multiple registrations. The massive scale of this electoral exercise involved over 7 lakh officials to ensure accurate mapping and voter registration across the state.
In summary, the upcoming voter list publication is a critical step for the electoral process in Uttar Pradesh. It emphasizes the importance of every citizen's participation in democracy and the need for voters to verify their details. As the March 6 deadline approaches, every effort must be made to ensure that every eligible voter is accounted for.
