98% of Rs 2000 Notes Returned; Rs 6,691 Crore Still with Public: RBI Update

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has confirmed that 98.12% of Rs 2000 notes, valued at Rs 3.56 lakh crore as of May 19, 2023, have been returned to banks following their withdrawal announcement. By December 31, 2024, only Rs 6,691 crore in Rs 2000 notes remain in circulation. While the exchange or deposit window at bank branches ended on October 7, 2023, citizens can still exchange these notes at 19 RBI offices or send them via India Post for deposit. Despite the withdrawal, Rs 2000 notes remain legal tender.
