Aaron Finch Calls IPL Captaincy His Toughest Challenge

03 Sep, 2025

Former Australia T20I captain Aaron Finch has recently opened up about his experiences in the Indian Premier League (IPL), labeling his time captaining the Pune Warriors as the most challenging phase of his career. Finch, who led Australia to a T20 World Cup win in 2021 and secured a Big Bash League title with Melbourne Renegades, faced a unique set of challenges during his IPL stint.

Finch emphasized that the IPL is particularly tough because of the short time teams have to gel together. When he joined Pune Warriors as a replacement player, he was thrust into the captaincy role just a few games in, leaving him little time to build relationships with his teammates. “At Pune Warriors, I came in as a replacement player and then two or three games later, I was captain,” he recalled. This rapid transition made it difficult for him to connect with the squad.

In contrast, he noted that captaining Australia was easier, as he was surrounded by world-class players who understood their roles well. Finch mentioned that while he performed admirably for Australia and in the BBL, he felt the pressure to deliver in the IPL sometimes led to him trying too hard, impacting his performance. Despite playing for several franchises, including Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, he found it challenging to secure a permanent spot.

Throughout his IPL career, Finch played for nine franchises, including stints with Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. He shared insights into the competitive nature of the league, where star players often overshadow others. “There were guys like David Warner, KP (Kevin Pietersen), Ross Taylor, and Mahela Jayawardene in front of me,” Finch explained, highlighting the hurdles he faced in making his mark. “After two years, when the team hasn’t had success, you’re the first one to go.”

Finch also expressed a desire to remain with a single franchise for longer, illustrating the challenge presented by the IPL’s auction system. He remarked on how few players have managed to build a legacy at one club, pointing to the frequent team changes and the nature of player selections. “There’s not a huge amount of players that have done it right throughout,” he said, noting that even legends like Rohit Sharma and Shane Watson moved franchises during their careers.

In conclusion, Finch’s reflections on his IPL journey reveal the intense pressure and unique dynamics of the tournament. His experiences serve as a reminder that even seasoned players face significant challenges in this high-stakes environment.
