ABVP Dominates DUSU Elections 2025
The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections this year have ignited a wave of excitement on campus, culminating in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) winning three out of four key positions. The atmosphere was electric as students celebrated the results, with dhol beats and rose petals marking the occasion. Aryan Maan, the ABVP candidate, triumphed in the presidential race, receiving an impressive 28,821 votes, overshadowing his closest rival from the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), Joslyn Nandita Choudhary, who garnered only 12,645 votes.
The election results indicate a split leadership, with the ABVP securing the positions of president, secretary, and joint secretary. Kunal Chaudhary and Deepika Jha were elected as secretary and joint secretary, respectively, marking a strong performance for ABVP. Meanwhile, the NSUI managed to win the vice-presidential post, held by Rahul Jhansla, who received 29,339 votes.
This year's electoral turnout was noteworthy, with 60,272 students casting their votes out of 1.53 lakh registered voters. The turnout of 39.36% represents a slight increase from previous years, demonstrating renewed interest in student politics. The election process was also marked by a significant change, as the university authorities strictly enforced anti-defacement rules, leading to a cleaner and more organized polling environment.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this election was the presence of women candidates, reflecting a positive shift in campus politics. Two of the main contenders for the presidency were women, showcasing the increasing representation of female voices in student leadership. Joslyn Nandita Choudhary of NSUI focused her campaign on pressing issues such as hostel shortages and campus safety, while Anjali from the SFI-AISA alliance campaigned on gender sensitization and grievance redressal mechanisms.
The DUSU elections are often seen as a stepping stone for future political leaders in India, with many former DUSU presidents going on to hold significant positions in national politics. The results from this year will likely influence the future of student activism and political engagement at Delhi University. As the dust settles on this election, students are hopeful for a year of constructive leadership and meaningful initiatives that address the concerns of the student body.
