Afghanistan Triumphs Over Hong Kong in Asia Cup 2025

11 Sep, 2025

Afghanistan kicked off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on a high note, securing a dominant 94-run victory against Hong Kong. The match, held on a vibrant Tuesday, showcased the remarkable talents of Afghan cricketers, particularly Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah Omarzai, who played pivotal roles in setting up an impressive total.

Batting first, Afghanistan faced early challenges but managed to recover, thanks to Atal's unbeaten 73 runs off 52 balls and Omarzai's explosive 53 runs off just 21 balls. Their partnership set the tone, allowing Afghanistan to post a formidable score of 188 runs for six wickets.

The Afghan bowlers then took center stage, demonstrating their skill and discipline. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the standout performer, taking two wickets for just 16 runs, while Gulbadin Naib claimed two wickets for only 8 runs. Hong Kong's batting lineup crumbled under pressure, managing to score only 94 runs for nine wickets, with Babar Hayat being the top scorer with 39 runs.

The match began with Afghanistan's batters struggling against Hong Kong's bowlers, but Atal and Omarzai's solid partnership brought stability. Atal, a left-handed opener, displayed excellent judgment of the pitch and played aggressively during the Power Play. His fifty came off 41 balls, and he navigated the innings with maturity, only hitting one big shot between the 5th and 13th overs.

Mohammad Nabi also contributed, scoring 33 off 26 balls. However, his dismissal sparked a mini-collapse, leaving Afghanistan at 95 for four at one point. But Atal and Omarzai then took charge, adding 82 runs for the fifth wicket, with Omarzai hitting four consecutive boundaries in one over.

Despite Hong Kong's efforts, their chase never gained momentum. They lost four wickets early, leaving them reeling at 23 for four. Their struggles were evident as they failed to build on any partnerships, leading to unnecessary runouts. Overall, Afghanistan's well-rounded performance in both batting and bowling set a strong precedent for their Asia Cup journey ahead.
