Air India Moves Domestic Flights to Other Terminals
Air India is making significant changes at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, specifically at Terminal 3 (T3). Starting October 26, the airline will relocate a portion of its domestic flights to the other two terminals—Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2). This move comes as part of an ongoing expansion project at T3, which is being upgraded to enhance its international passenger capacity.
Currently, T3 serves as the only terminal for international flights, handling a significant volume of domestic flights as well. With T3's expansion aimed at increasing its capacity from 20 million to approximately 32 million international passengers annually, Air India will transfer 60 out of its 180 daily domestic departures to T2. Meanwhile, all operations of Air India Express will shift to the revamped T1.
To help passengers identify their new terminals easily, Air India will renumber flights departing from or arriving at T2 with a four-digit number starting with '1'. This clear distinction aims to reduce confusion among travelers. The airline has assured that notifications will be sent to passengers with existing bookings for flights affected by this relocation.
In contrast to Air India's previous operations, which were confined to T3 since its opening in 2010, this shift allows for a more efficient use of airport resources. IndiGo, India's largest airline, has already been operating from all three terminals, making this a notable change for Air India.
For passengers connecting between terminals, Air India will provide inter-terminal transfers between T1, T2, and T3 for those carrying boarding passes for onward flights. This service is designed to ensure smooth transitions, especially for travelers with checked baggage, which will be transferred seamlessly.
Passengers needing to navigate between terminals can utilize the airport's shuttle service, which operates every 10 minutes. Additionally, travelers with reduced mobility will have access to comfortable buggy rides between T2 and T3. Air India has also committed to deploying additional staff at both terminals to assist travelers during this transition.
Overall, these changes reflect Air India's commitment to improving passenger experience and airport efficiency amidst growing demand for international travel. The adjustments are expected to streamline operations and enhance connectivity at one of India's busiest airports.
