Airlines Raise Fares Amid Rising Oil Prices

16 Mar, 2026

The recent surge in oil prices, spurred by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, has led to significant fare hikes by major airlines in India. IndiGo, the country's largest airline, has announced that it will implement a sector-based fuel charge on all domestic and international tickets starting March 14, 2026. Although the airline acknowledged that fully compensating for the rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices would require a substantial increase in base fares, it has chosen a smaller charge to ease the burden on travelers.

Similarly, the Air India group, which includes Air India and AI Express, has started a phased rollout of surcharges as of March 12, 2026. The airline has warned that without these adjustments, some flights may no longer be economically viable for operation. This reflects the difficult choices airlines face in a volatile market where fuel prices have roughly doubled since the conflict began on February 28.

Budget carriers are also feeling the heat. SpiceJet has voiced concerns that airlines have little option but to impose surcharges if oil prices remain high. The founder, Ajay Singh, has called on the Indian government to reduce excise duties and Value Added Tax (VAT) on jet fuel, as even prices at $90 per barrel are becoming unsustainable for operations. This plea highlights the broader implications of rising fuel costs on the aviation industry in India.

Another low-cost airline, AirAsia, confirmed that it has raised fares and adjusted its fuel surcharges, although it has not provided specific details on the sector-wise increases. This trend among various airlines signals a challenging period ahead for travelers, as the cumulative impact of these fare hikes could significantly affect travel plans across the country.

As the situation continues to develop, travelers are advised to stay updated on fare changes and consider their options carefully. The rising costs, driven by global events, are becoming a critical factor in travel decisions, especially for those planning trips in the near future.
