Airlines Raise Fares as Fuel Prices Soar

17 Mar, 2026

The airline industry is currently facing significant challenges as global fuel prices soar, largely due to geopolitical tensions such as the ongoing US-Iran conflict. This surge in fuel costs has prompted carriers around the world, including India’s own Air India, to increase their fares. Starting from March 12, Air India will introduce fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights, making travel more expensive for passengers.

On domestic routes, travelers will see an additional charge of ₹399. For international flights, particularly those headed to Southeast Asia, the surcharge will rise from $40 to $60, while flights to Africa will see a jump to $90. The most significant increase will apply to European routes, where the surcharge will reach $125. Passengers traveling to North America and Australia will face an even steeper increase, with charges soaring to $200.

Air India is not alone in this price hike. Other airlines are also adjusting their fare structures in response to rising fuel prices. Budget airline AirAsia has recently announced that it has raised fares and adjusted fuel surcharges, although it did not specify the exact amounts. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s national carrier, Air New Zealand, warned that ticket prices would rise and hinted at possible adjustments to schedules and routes if fuel costs remain high.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific is planning to double its passenger fuel surcharges starting March 18, and Finnair has decided to incorporate fluctuating fuel costs directly into ticket prices instead of charging them separately. SpiceJet has also expressed concerns, noting that airlines might have no choice but to impose additional surcharges if the price of oil stays elevated. The founder, Ajay Singh, has urged the government to consider reducing taxes on jet fuel, as prices around $90 per barrel could become unsustainable for airlines.

Passengers should prepare for the reality of increased travel costs as airlines navigate these turbulent times. With multiple carriers adjusting their fare structures, it’s essential for travelers to stay informed about potential charges before booking their flights.
