Airlines Rise Fares Amid Soaring Fuel Costs

13 Mar, 2026

The escalating fuel prices resulting from the ongoing US-Iran conflict are causing a ripple effect across the airline industry, impacting both international and domestic travel. In India, major carriers like Air India and Air India Express have announced fare hikes along with fuel surcharges that will take effect from March 12. Passengers on domestic flights will see an increase of ₹399, while international fares to Southeast Asia will rise from $40 to $60. Notably, flights to Africa will also see a surge, raising charges from $40 to $90.

As the changes roll out, travelers flying to Europe will face a substantial increase of $125 in surcharges, while those heading to North America and Australia will pay an additional $200. This trend is not limited to Indian airlines; global counterparts are also adjusting their pricing structures. For instance, Air New Zealand has warned of rising ticket prices and has suspended its earnings forecast due to unreliable fuel price assumptions.

Other carriers like Cathay Pacific are planning to double their passenger fuel surcharges, indicating that this issue is prevalent worldwide. On long-haul flights, the surcharge will increase significantly. Additionally, budget airline SpiceJet has expressed concerns over the sustainability of these prices, suggesting that if oil remains high, airlines might have no choice but to implement further surcharges. Their founder, Ajay Singh, has called on the Indian government to consider reducing jet fuel taxes to alleviate some of this pressure.

This situation raises concerns about the affordability of air travel for many Indians, who may find themselves reconsidering their travel plans as costs increase. In a country where air travel is becoming increasingly popular, these fare hikes could deter potential travelers and affect the overall growth of the aviation sector.

As the situation continues to evolve, travelers should stay informed about potential changes in fares and schedules. The airline industry’s response to fluctuating fuel costs will be crucial in determining future ticket pricing and passenger travel experiences.
