Aloka the Peace Dog's 2,300-Mile Journey

06 Jan, 2026

In an inspiring tale that transcends borders, an abandoned dog named Aloka has emerged as a symbol of peace, walking alongside a group of Buddhist monks on a remarkable 2,300-mile journey across the United States. Aloka's journey began during a 112-day peace walk across India, where he chose to follow the monks, who were on a mission to promote harmony and unity.

Initially, the monks discovered Aloka, believed to be an Indian Pariah dog, during their walk. This stray dog had seemingly adopted the monks, joining them on their mission. His journey took a challenging turn when he was struck by a car and later fell ill. The monks, concerned for Aloka’s health, tried to give him respite by placing him in a truck. However, Aloka had other plans; he leapt out and returned to the road, demonstrating his determination to stay with his new family.

As one monk expressed in a TikTok video, “He followed us the whole time. He’s a true hero. He wanted to walk. That inspires a lot.” Today, Aloka continues to accompany the monks, who are based at the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana in Fort Worth, Texas. Their mission is to encourage compassion, peace, and unity, and Aloka plays a vital role in this journey.

In October, the group of 19 monks and Aloka embarked on their ambitious walk from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C. They aim to complete this journey in 110 days, traversing ten states and reaching the nation’s capital by February. As of late December, they had already made significant progress, reaching Atlanta. Their journey is being closely followed on social media, where Aloka has gained his own following on Instagram.

This endeavor has captured the hearts of many, including Texas Representative Nicole Collier, who remarked on the impact of this walk. She noted that it touches “the hearts and minds of people” during a time when division can often overshadow unity. The monks’ journey serves as a beacon of hope, showing that with calm hearts and unwavering determination, they are committed to promoting peace and resilience.

As their official Walk for Peace Instagram page states, this journey is filled with both known and unforeseen challenges. Yet, the monks and Aloka move forward step by step, embodying the spirit of peace and reminding everyone that compassion and unity are essential, now more than ever.
