Asian Markets Open as China and South Korea Celebrate

13 Jan, 2026

The stock markets of China and South Korea are closed on October 8 due to festive holidays, impacting trading in these regions. China’s stock exchanges, including the Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing stock exchanges, are shut for the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival. This eight-day holiday started on October 1 and will resume trading on October 9, marking the last stock market holiday for China in 2025. The previous holiday was for the Dragon Boat Festival on June 2.

On the other hand, South Korea is celebrating Chuseok, a significant holiday also known as Hangawi. The South Korean market is closed from October 6 to October 8 for this festive occasion. Following Chuseok, the next stock market holiday in South Korea is on October 9 for Hangul Day, with additional holidays on December 25 for Christmas and December 31 for New Year’s Eve.

While China and South Korea’s markets are closed, other Asian markets, including India, Japan, and Hong Kong, remain active. The markets in Japan have seen positive movement; the Nikkei 225 gained 0.4%, and the Topix index rose by 0.62%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index futures also indicated a higher opening, reflecting overall market optimism.

The World Bank has raised its growth forecast for the region, contributing to the bullish sentiment in these markets. Investors are advised to remain alert to market movements, especially during festive periods when trading dynamics can shift significantly.

As trading resumes in China and South Korea, traders and investors in India and other open markets may look to capitalize on the situation. It’s essential to stay updated with market news and trends, particularly when major markets have varying schedules due to local holidays.
