Athlete Shipra Sarkar Gets 4-Year Ban Extension

29 Nov, 2025

In an important development for Indian athletics, the Anti Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) has imposed an additional four-year ban on middle-distance runner Shipra Sarkar. This decision comes after she was found to have participated in competitions while serving her initial four-year doping ban. The ruling underscores the seriousness of doping violations and the need for athletes to adhere strictly to anti-doping regulations.

Shipra Sarkar, a 30-year-old athlete from West Bengal, was initially suspended for testing positive for androgens during an out-of-competition test in February 2020. Her original ban lasts from June 29, 2020, to June 28, 2024. However, despite this suspension, she competed in the All India Inter-Railways Athletics Championships in 2022 and 2023. Her participation in these events was a clear violation of the National Anti-Doping Rules, specifically Article 10.14.1, which prohibits participation during an ineligibility period.

When the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) discovered her participation, it charged her with violating these rules, leading to a hearing by the ADDP. During the hearing, Shipra claimed her participation was unintentional, stemming from a misunderstanding of the rules. However, the panel rejected her argument, stating that as a seasoned athlete, she should have exercised greater diligence concerning compliance with anti-doping regulations.

The ADDP's decision to extend her ban until June 27, 2028, serves as a clear message to all athletes about the consequences of ignoring doping regulations. The panel emphasized that National Sports Federations must ensure that athletes serving sanctions are not allowed to compete during their ineligibility periods. This ruling is expected to deter other athletes from similar violations, reinforcing the integrity of sports in India.

In conclusion, Shipra Sarkar's case highlights the critical need for awareness and adherence to anti-doping rules among athletes. The ruling not only penalizes her actions but also aims to foster a culture of clean sport and accountability in Indian athletics.
