Auqib Nabi: J&K's Bowling Sensation Shines Bright
Auqib Nabi, the 27-year-old pacer from Jammu and Kashmir, is making significant waves in the Indian domestic cricket scene. His ability to swing the ball both ways with remarkable accuracy has garnered attention, especially during his recent performances in the Ranji Trophy. His skills were particularly evident in a match against Delhi, where he showcased his talent by taking crucial wickets, including a brilliant spell that helped dismiss Delhi for just 211 runs.
Nabi’s journey in cricket has been impressive. Last season, he took 44 wickets, aiding Jammu and Kashmir in reaching the quarterfinals. His consistent performance earned him a spot in the North Zone Duleep Trophy team, where he further proved his mettle by taking a hat-trick and several five-wicket hauls. This season, he has already claimed 24 wickets, marking him as a player to watch.
What sets Nabi apart is his unique bowling technique. He has dedicated himself to mastering both outswing and inswing deliveries, acknowledging the challenges posed by flat pitches. Despite facing stiff competition from some of the best bowlers in India, like Bumrah and Shami, he believes his ability to make the ball move gives him an advantage on challenging surfaces.
Born and raised in Baramulla, Kashmir, Nabi has been the highest wicket-taker among fast bowlers in the Ranji Trophy over the past two seasons. With a total of 75 wickets since the start of the 2024-25 season, he is making his mark. However, despite his achievements, he has not yet received national recognition, missing out on selections for India 'A' and the IPL.
Nabi acknowledges that his pace, which ranges from 125-135 km/h, may not be enough to catch the selectors' eyes immediately. However, he remains optimistic, stating, “If it is not my advantage that I don’t bowl very fast, it is my advantage that I can get the ball to move both ways. Not everyone can do that.” His determination and skill make him a promising talent in Indian cricket.
As the domestic season progresses, cricket enthusiasts will be eager to see how Auqib Nabi continues to develop and whether he can break into the national team, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from regions like Jammu and Kashmir.
