Auto Sales Slowdown in August 2025: GST Impact
India's automotive market faced a slowdown in sales during August 2025, as consumers hesitated to make purchases, waiting for new GST rates on cars and two-wheelers. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA), retail car sales saw a modest year-on-year increase of 0.93%, amounting to 3,23,256 units. In contrast, retail two-wheeler sales experienced a slightly higher rise of 2.18%, reaching 13,73,675 units.
The FADA President, CS Vigneshwar, noted that the month began positively, with a surge in inquiries and festive bookings. However, the latter half witnessed a slowdown as the anticipated GST 2.0 reforms led to delays in decision-making among buyers. Additionally, heavy rains and flooding disrupted customer footfall at dealerships, further complicating the situation.
Supply chain issues also contributed to the muted sales. Dealers faced challenges in maintaining adequate inventory levels of high-demand models, alongside aggressive targets set by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This combination of factors created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the market.
Despite the temporary lull in sales, automotive dealers remain hopeful for September. They anticipate a rebound in demand as clarity around GST is expected to emerge, coinciding with auspicious festive days that traditionally boost consumer spending. The convergence of these elements is likely to unlock the deferred demand that has accumulated over the past weeks.
