Car dealerships in India are facing a sharp slowdown in sales, leading to high inventory levels and steep discounts. Over the past three months, carmakers like Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki, who once had long waitlists, are now offering substantial discounts on popular models. This downturn is attributed to several factors, including the easing of the post-pandemic chip shortage, weak demand for entry-level vehicles, and waning interest in certain models like BEVs. Extreme weather conditions and delayed buying decisions are also contributing to this slump, with dealership inventories rising to 75 days by August.
